Healing Stories

I am thankful that I can continually add content to this page.
Come visit again to find out what miracles God is doing!

In my book, Overcoming the Overwhelming, A 40-Day Journey toward Rediscovering Faith in God, I share many testimonies of divine healing. I am posting them here (along with others) so that those who have not yet read the book might be encouraged. I will add others as they occur as well. Unless otherwise noted, these are personal testimonies by C. D. Hildebrand. I say that so you will understand these are first hand accounts. For a full discussion on divine healing and the superstitions that keep us from receiving what God has provided for us in this area, please read the above book.

Baby Joey
Written in 2004 about events that took place in May 1978

When our daughter, Joella, was born, we knew something was wrong when they didn’t bring her in to see me. She was in an incubator gasping for each breath. Before they took her to a bigger hospital for evaluation, they rolled her into my room so I could see her. She was beautiful, and my arms ached to hold her. Her bushy red hair filled my heart with delight. Before she was two days old, the family started calling her Joey.

The next hospital decided to fly her to U.C. Davis Medical Center because she needed 100% oxygen. I knew our church was praying for a miracle. This was so comforting as I was very weak right after my C-section. I only had just enough strength to say aloud, “Satan, you can’t have my baby.” A short while later, my husband who was with her called me, and he said, “Satan can’t have our baby.” I told him I had just said the same thing. We believed God’s Word that the fruit of my womb was blessed (Deut. 28:4).

I could feel the support of the prayers of our church. I knew she would be fine, but it was serious. The valve between her lungs and heart that closes at birth had remained open. We waited days to see if it would close naturally, but it didn’t. We consented to experimental medicine to close it, but it didn’t work. The next step would be surgery. (PDA is a congenital heart defect wherein the ductus arteriosus fails to close after birth.)

My understanding of Joella’s medical condition was that it had to do with her breathing only. One day while on the phone with a nurse, she said something about her “heart” problem, and I said, “What about her heart? I haven’t heard anything about her heart,” which resulted in me being put on hold and the nurse immediately retrieving a doctor to explain.

It was like a storm in the midst of a storm, but David and I continued to believe that the fruit of my womb was blessed and that Satan could not have our baby. Shortly after this, the valve closed.

We asked the doctor about what happened. He told us plainly that the valve did not close because of the medicine because there were only a limited number of hours it could be effective, and they had long past. He said there was no explanation for it closing by itself. We said, “Then it was a miracle.” He said that it would seem so.

Joella is an adult now with five, count them, five children of her own and perfectly healthy. She is a long-distance runner, too. She loves God with all her heart and knows He saved her life. God was faithful to His Word, and now she lives to serve Him. We are so thankful for the woman she is and our lives would not be the same without her in them.

Thank-You, Jesus for your faithfulness.

Psalm 46:1-5
God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
2Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah
4There is a river whose streams shall make
glad the city of God,
The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.
5God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;
God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.

Psalm 5:11-12
Let all those who put their trust in You rejoice; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them;
Let those also who love Your name
Be joyful in You.
12For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround them as with a shield.

Christina’s Faith
Written in 2004 about events that took place in 1980

Our daughter, Christina, began showing allergies to food at a very young age. She was allergic to eggs, milk products, red apples, mandarin oranges, and especially to corn. Even though we made sure she didn’t eat these things, sometimes we’d forget, or someone wouldn’t know and feed one of these foods to her. She would get horrible stomach aches followed by a rash.

I figured this was just how it would be for her, but I started to notice that it was affecting her personality by making her irritable. Her little three-year-old eyes would look at me as if to say, “Help me, Mommy.” When I began to see how miserable she was and that it was altering her personality, I got mad. Why was I allowing this to go on?

Around that time (in 1980), during a prayer service, I went into the nursery and got her to have the elders anoint her with oil and pray for her. I told her that Jesus was going to heal her of her allergies. In my heart, there was a holy anger at these allergies. I felt like somewhere in my spirit I was putting my foot down. I was not going to take this anymore! The man who prayed for her did just as I asked. He prayed that she would be completely healed.

A day or two later, we were having dinner at a friend’s house. As they passed around the whole kernel corn, the worst possible food for her, she put some on her plate. I looked at her and was going to remind her of her allergy to corn, but before I had a chance, she said, “It’s OK, Mommy. Jesus healed me.” I was not about to get in the way of her faith, and I said, “OK.” From that moment on, Christina had no food allergies of any kind. One day, she was allergic to almost everything. The next day, after our prayer and her confession of faith, she was allergic to nothing.

I know that sometimes children grow out of food allergies, but not overnight. God honored His promise and her faith. The most wonderful part was that this made a tremendous difference in her personality. She was finally free from pain and able to enjoy life and all the good foods God created.

We told my mom about this miracle by asking her to make us some popcorn. She, at first, looked at me as if I’d forgotten that Tina couldn’t have popcorn recalling how sick Tina got when my mom made it for her a few months before that. With both Tina and I smiling at her, we explained that Tina had been healed. My mom’s eyes just about popped out of her head, and then she sat down on her kitchen floor and cried like a baby. How full of joy we all were at God’s faithfulness.

April 13, 2016 He Will Give His Angels Charge Over Thee

I want to publicly thank God for protecting me today. It was a beautiful day here, and I went to pick up two of my grandchildren from school. My grandson, Levi, arrived first and asked if I’d like to play tether ball with him. Well, of course, I said yes, and I was teaching him strategies as we were playing. I had lunged forward to make a good punch and then switched directions to run back to keep the ball going (are you holding your breath for me yet?). When I moved quickly backwards, my foot slid out of my shoe causing me to go backwards while my feet went out from under me as I rolled backward into a partial somersault over my left shoulder. It all happened in slow motion. I could not stop the fall sufficiently due to the angle and speed of my roll which probably kept me from breaking a wrist. My head never touched the ground…how I cannot imagine. I felt myself hit the asphalt, yes, asphalt , but not on my hip…somewhere between my hip and tailbone…so neither of them was broken. I ended up facing sideways sitting up. I sat there for a few minutes moving each area of my body which was traumatized, and was relieved to realize nothing seemed broken. The only real pain I had was on my foot where it had slipped out of my shoe and slid on the asphalt. There was a tiny cut in my heal with a teeny tiny spot of blood on it, otherwise, it was fine. Even my ankle seemed fine. A lady came over to ask if I needed help, and I realized I couldn’t get up off the ground by myself, so she helped me. I walked away wondering when the endorphins would fade, but the day went on and I barely had any soreness and no bruises. I am so thankful that somehow I was spared what could have been a lengthy stay in the hospital with multiple breaks and even a concussion. I didn’t know I could still do a summersault. The only sad thing is that no one got a video of it. It had to be hilarious along with being completely miraculous. Thank-You, Jesus!!!

February 17, 2015 “Jesus, I Receive”

Saturday morning, or maybe it was Friday, I woke up with a pain in my right side right below my waste. I researched what it might be, and I was not pleased with the possibilities. If I sat still, it didn’t hurt, so I thought maybe I slept on it funny. Anyway, the pain was pretty intense when I would try to walk or move. This WAS NOT a good thing because this weekend we needed to get MUCH done in an apartment we were working on. It was getting so intense, I wondered if I’d be able to continue working with the pain. I turned to my hubby and said, let’s pray, and we did. David commanded the pain to be leave. I put my hands in front of me and said, “Jesus, I receive.” Instantly, the pain nearly disappeared, and by the end of the day was completely gone. There has been no hint of it since. Thank-You, Jesus.

Matthew 17:20
Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

Healing Surprise

A few years ago, we attended a Christian conference. At the end of one of the sessions, the speaker invited people up for prayer. Instead of personally praying for people, there was a prayer team lined up front. The minister asked that if anyone had pain in their back to come forward.

I remembered that my husband, David, had been experiencing pain in his back for quite some time. X-rays done by a chiropractor showed that his discs were compressed. So, I encouraged my husband to go up for prayer. Since he wasn’t having any pain at the moment, he hesitated. I nearly pushed him out of his chair to go up there, and he finally did. When he returned to his seat, I asked him about it. He said, “I believe I am healed,” but since he didn’t have any pain, he couldn’t physically tell.

For many days, he had no back pain, but one day after he went jogging, his back hurt him again. He felt discouraged because he had great hopes that he would be better. Since it had been some time since he’d seen the first chiropractor and he didn’t remember his name, he made an appointment with a new chiropractor who took new X-rays.

When the doctor brought them out to show David he said, “Look here. You have the back of a 30-year-old.” (David was about 50 then.) David looked at the films, and sure enough, each disc was in perfect condition.

While driving home, David felt some disappointment. He’d hoped the chiropractor could help him with the pain, but then it hit him! He’d been healed! His compressed discs were perfectly normal. Glory to God!
Christina’s Confession

Our daughter, Christina, had an inguinal hernia at about age five. I didn’t notice it until she began to take gymnastics. When she would jump, we could see it pop out.

So, we showed this to the doctor. He said it wasn’t life-threatening, and we could watch it for a while. Over time, it got bigger about the size of a small walnut. The doctor said that the next step would be surgery. I was not pleased with this option.

So, I told Christina, “When you see it pop out, say, ‘By His stripes I am healed.’” Thankfully, she didn’t have layers of negative ideas to get in her way of believing. She simply had faith that Jesus was her Healer. Time went by; life got busy, and I mostly forgot about it.

On her next check-up, though, the doctor said to her, “Jump. Jump again.” Then he looked at me and said, “Didn’t she have a hernia right here?” I looked, and sure enough, it was gone. I said, “Yes,” and then explained to him what happened.

He said, “Well, I don’t know what you did, but whatever it was, it worked.” Christina heard the good news that Jesus was her Healer, and based on the fact that by His wounds we are healed, she received healing.
